When the 2016-17 University of Hawai’I Hilo athletic season kicks off this Saturday at 8 a.m. in Laie, Hawai’I, it will be the smallest team on campus that leads the way. Coach Jaime Guerpo’s women’s cross country team, six members strong, will hear the starter’s gun bright and early at the Seasider Invitational on August 27. The meet, hosted by BYU-Hawaii, signals the beginning of the Vulcan athletic year. Guerpo heads into his 18th season as the Vulcan leader, counting on junior veteran Anna Baker Mikkelsen to lead the way. The Denmark native will contend for All-Pacific West Conference honors at the championship meet, which will be hosted this year by UHH at Kamehameha School on October 22. “It is exciting to be able to host the PacWest Championships,” Guerpo said. “We have a challenging course with some unique qualities. We look forward to putting on a great event.”
